The next time a colleague mentions "engaging" audiences, remind them that:

  • personal injuries are engaging
  • house fires are engaging
  • an abandoned baby on your doorstep is engaging

Engagement isn't the goal. Museums can't survive on "engagement". Museums need revenue to fuel their missions.

And engagement isn't their goal either. A person doesn't visit a museum to be engaged. A person pursues experiences to help them achieve their goals.

Engagement is the result, not the cause.
