Fires are engaging.
But when was the last time a visitor asked you to set them on fire?
The next time a colleague mentions "engaging" audiences, remind them that:
- personal injuries are engaging
- house fires are engaging
- an abandoned baby on your doorstep is engaging
Engagement isn't the goal. Museums can't survive on "engagement". Museums need revenue to fuel their missions.
And engagement isn't their goal either. A person doesn't visit a museum to be engaged. A person pursues experiences to help them achieve their goals.
Engagement is the result, not the cause.
What if we stopped pursuing results?
